Kadek Dewi Aryani - Family and Home "I was always surrounded by music. At home, I listened to traditional folk songs. and at the parades and at the temple during our religious celebrations, I heard the sacret songs." As children, we grew up close to nature and close to our families - intimately connected to our villages and our gods. Children are given a lot of attention and love from an early age on. They are taught to be respectful to their parents and our elders, have to do chores around the house (like washing their own clothes, help with cooking, cleaning the house), but are also given freedom to play. If you were to walk through my family home, it might seem like a small banjar - a small village in itself. You'll find temples, various buildings, vegetable and flower gardens, meeting areas... all surrounded by a wall. For us - the home is like a living and breathing body... The head is the temple, and the torso is the large family living here. The feet are the individual people and the hands are symbolic for being together and working together in harmony. Always lots of people and activities... woodcarvers are working on sculptures, painters are filling the paint buckets, carpenters are cutting wood, and merchants setting up their displays. Everybody has a role to play, and everyone is respected for what they do. Tradition mandates that we take care of our elders, we therefore share our house with four generations of family... and the families of siblings. Besides the presence of our own families, we often entertain guests... visitors arrive to rehearse dances and play music, or just come to talk.	My family - parents, sisters & brother
Sanggar Seni Nritta Dewi is the name of our own family gamelan orchestra with dancers. All members of the family participate, including the children... We perform in hotels for tourists, and have been shown own local Balinese television. One important fact to mention is that the group also teaches children and interested visitors in the traditional art of Balinese gamelan and dance.
